Winter Home Maintenance Checklist
Our winter home maintenance checklist will ensure you’re nice and warm during the cold winter months and your outdoor furniture is protected from the elements.
- Winterize your outdoor faucets: If you didn’t remove your garden hoses in the fall, be sure to take care of this before the first frost of the season. Flush them and put a winter guard in place to prevent the faucet from freezing.
- Inspect your doors and windows for air gaps: Check all the windows and exterior doors to ensure no heat loss is happening. Caulk and use winter guard sweeps when necessary.
- Test and inspect fire safety equipment: Ensure the smoke detectors, sensors, and batteries are functioning properly.
- Store your outdoor furniture: Put away your umbrellas and patio furniture.
- Get your snow removal equipment ready: Test your snow blower and get your snow shovel and salt melt ready before the first snowfall of the season.
- Set your thermostat: Confirm your thermostat is working and set it to at least 55 degrees when you’re away from home to avoid a burst pipe.
- Do a deep cleaning: Clean every corner of your home—wipe down your walls, vacuum under your furniture, and give a good refresh to the spaces and appliances in between. The amount of dust that can accumulate in a mere three months is astonishing.
- Lubricate your door hinges: To prevent your doors from making squeaking sounds when you open or close them, you should lubricate your door hinges once a year.
